Between October and mid February, fishing for Huchen is one of the pinnacles in Fly Fishing. We like to call Huchen the fish of thousand casts, as it is truly challenging to trick them. But if the moment is right a hit from one of those beasts can mean a fish of your lifetime as Slovenian rivers like Sava Bohinjka, Sava and Kolpa are still home to Huchen that can weigh up to 30 kilograms.
Usual day of Huchen fishing starts early in the morning and ends in pitch dark. Dawn and dusk are the best times to fish as they are ambush predators and like the cover of the dark. Anyhow, there are numerous occasions when Huchen are seen chasing prey in the middle of the day, especially in the winter months and at higher flows. We use big flies which we strip or swing at different depths and we do our best to be as stealthy as possible.
This can be a gruelling type of Fly fishing; wading in ice cold water in an overcast day with snow showers and repeating cast after cast can be quite harsh… But when you feel the abrupt hit and instant load of your road it becomes all worth it. Catching a Huchen is something a Fly fisherman will remember his/her whole life.
